Mobile Device Enforcement Charge

It is an offence under the Road Vehicles Regulations Act 1986 to use a hand-held mobile phone or similar hand-held device while driving.

The offence carries a fine of £200 and six penalty points.

A mobile phone must not be used in a hand held manner whilst driving, under any circumstances unless it is an emergency and it's not possible to safely stop the vehicle to dial 999.

A driver is four times more likely to cause an accident due to using a mobile phone whilst driving

It is four times more likely that someone would need hospital treatment as a result of a driver using a mobile phone

A drivers awareness and perception is reduced significantly and a motorist is similarly as dangerous as a drink driver due to reduced awareness

The UK Department of Transport advice is to turn the phone off / airplane mode, or on silent and put it away in the glovebox so it isnt a distraction.

If you are required to use a device for navigation / calls you may use a holder affixed to the dash / windscreen in a manner that does not obstruct the view.

The phone maybe used within a holder in a similar manner to a car radio.

However you may still receive points if a police officer deems that you are significantly distracted and driving without due care and attention.

The purpose of this warning is educational awareness to change driver behavior and prevent further offending.
